Granted, cutting LED strip is not a Lutron-specific problem. But it becomes one when you're trying to control it via a Lutron Grafik Eye or a Vive hub.

I had a job in a Coconut Grove restaurant. The spec called for color-tunable LED strip under the bar, controlled by a Lutron QS system. The strip came in 5-meter rolls. I cut it at the wrong point—right through a resistor. The entire 5-meter reel was dead.

The cost? $180. The embarrassment? High. The lesson: each strip has designated cut lines. Use them. Also, test the segment BEFORE you connect it to the Lutron controller.

From my perspective, the most common error is not accounting for the power injection point. A long run of 24V LED strip needs power fed in from the middle or both ends, or the brightness will drop off noticeably.

6. Is the Lutron Caseta switch compatible with a 3-way setup?

Yes, but you need the Pico remote and a specific bracket, or a wired companion dimmer.

I get why people ask this. It's not obvious. In September 2022, I tried to wire a standard 3-way setup with two Caseta dimmers. Spoiler: it doesn't work that way. One side of the 3-way must be a standard mechanical switch or a Pico remote, not a second Caseta dimmer unit.

The install guide is actually clear, but I skimmed it. The result: the customer could only turn the lights on from one location, defeating the entire purpose of a 3-way. I had to re-run the wiring the next day. The fix was a Pico wall mount kit, which worked fine, but it wasn't what I'd promised.

Now I check: Caseta is wireless-only for the auxiliary control. Maestro has a wired companion. Know which system you're using.

7. A checklist I use for every Miami Lutron order to avoid the headache.

It's not a full manual, but it's saved me hundreds of hours. Here it is:

  • Check the load type. LED vs. magnetic vs. electronic low voltage. Use the right Lutron dimmer. The PD-10NXD is NOT the same as the PD-6WCL.
  • Check the voltage drop for any run over 50 feet. Especially 24V downlights and LED strip.
