Why Lutron Lighting South Florida Specs Fail—And What to Check First

The Problem I Keep Running Into

A contractor in South Florida calls me with the same frustration: 'We put Lutron dimmers on LED chandelier lamps, and now they flicker.' In Southlake, the message is almost identical: 'The Lutron lighting control Southlake spec was approved, but the fixtures won't dim below 40%.'

My first question is always the same: Did you check the actual lamp and driver model against Lutron's compatibility data? Most of the time, the answer is no.

Dimmable Doesn't Mean Compatible

If you're working with LED lighting, the load is the driver, not just the visible bulb. An LED bulb can say 'dimmable' on the box and still be a nightmare on a specific dimmer. Some LED drivers are designed for forward-phase dimmers. Others expect reverse-phase. Lutron makes both, but you have to choose the right one for the driver. Pair a phase-control dimmer with a 0-10V driver and you'll get flicker, shimmer, or nothing at all.

That database is the result of actual testing, not guesswork. If a driver model doesn't appear on the list, it hasn't been verified—and no amount of 'it should work' changes that.

Chandelier Lamps Make It Worse

Chandelier lamp specs are especially tricky. A chandelier usually has multiple small bulbs, so the total wattage can be very low. Many dimmers have a minimum load requirement. If your chandelier has eight 2.5W LED candelabra bulbs, that's 20W. If the dimmer needs a 25W minimum, you've already lost.

I once followed the compatibility chart without double-checking the total wattage. The numbers said the bulb was listed. My gut said the chandelier lamp was too weak. I went with the numbers. It flickered at low end. My gut wasn't magic—it was just telling me the minimum load issue I should have caught on paper.

Grow Lights Complicate the Conversation

And if you're asking whether a grow light is considered indirect sunlight, the short answer is no. A grow light is direct, supplemental light with a specific spectrum. For plants, that distinction matters. For lighting controls, it matters too, because most grow lights use constant-current drivers that are not designed to work with a standard wall dimmer.

I worked on a project where a grow light was tied into the same switch leg as a chandelier lamp. The homeowner wanted both on 'a dimmer.' The grow light flickered, the chandelier flickered, and neither one was the dimmer's fault. The fix was separating the circuits and using a driver listed as dimmable—or no dimmer at all.

The Cost of Skipping Verification

This isn't a theoretical problem. In Q4 2024, we received a batch of fixtures where the spec sheet said 'dimmable LED driver.'
